Dayen Information
What exactly is a dayen?
The dayens are an engineered species created by Alianna. They have many different features from several different species, which include the horse, camel, and antelope. (Click here to see an adult female) When Alianna created the dayens, she used a bit of magic, too, and because of it, they are a lot intelligent than the average beasts of burden they are supposed to be. This extra intelligence makes them imprint on other sentient species. If you were to bond one of these dayens, he/she would follow you around like a large dog.
What colors are they?
Dayens come in six different colors. Three of them are distinctly female: (listed in order of rank) white, chocolate, and sandy. The other three are mostly male: gray, tan, and black. Sometimes, there are spotted or striped dayens, but they are rare.
Can they talk?
It depends on your level of magic. They're not that hard to understand,if you know how. Someone Chosen by a dayen will always be able to understand them.
What do they eat?
They're vegetarians. Grass and oats preferably, and an apple now orthen. Feed them like a horse and you won't go wrong, but they don't need as much to drink. Strange dayens can rarely be found eating meat (their genetics sometimes do odd things) but they usually get kinda sick afterwards.
Why are dayens called dayens?
Because I liked that name. :)
Who invented the name 'dayen'? What does it mean?
I invented it. It means: "large furry creature that resembles a camel".:D Actually, I have no idea.
What was the first dayen's name?
Jalopie. Yes, that's my Jalopie. He was the first, and Mysta was the second. They were part of my big project to become an official wizard, but I liked them a lot and have pretty much spread out from there. Surprised they turned out so well for a first try.
How many dayens in a herd?
Four is usually the accepted minimum number for a herd. Two breedingpairs, and alpha and beta. Usually the alpha pair has one rare (or two), though in some circumstances (like in the wild) it will simply be the largestand/or strongest pair.
Are there wild dayens?
Yes -- a few pairs of mine escaped, and apparently they like the climatein the Dragonlands. There's a few herds now, as far as I'm aware. Jalopie is better at finding them then I am, and he says three. The dragons usethem as a food source, too, much to my dismay.
How do they survive in the wild?
They're tougher than you think ... not to mention their tail bladehelps a bit. Yes, that is what that weird leaf-shaped thing on the endof their tails is.
Why aren't there different breeds of dayen?
I never thought about it when I "invented" them. Maybe at some pointI'll add that in, but I have my hands full right now.
